Siddharth Haobijam’s photo feature ‘Bishesh Glam – A world within a world’, published on Point Blank 7 in 2014, has won him the prestigious Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity 2013-14 under the Best Photo feature category in the Eastern region. He was presented the award at a function in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday 10 March, 2015.
Instituted by Mumbai-based Population First and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), the award is presented in recognition of gender sensitive reporting to journalists and mediapersons.
Based in Imphal, Manipur, Siddharth Haobijam has been documenting the lives of the transgenders of Manipur for more than three years now.
Locally referred to as the “Nupi Maanbi”, the transgenders of Manipur are less known in India and the rest of the world . The Nupi Maanbi or the “one who look like women” have their own unique identity and culture which is very different from the transgender community of the rest of India (Hijra).
“This award is an honour and recognition for all the photo-journalists from the North Eastern region”,
says Siddharth Haobijam.
The jury, which included highly esteemed members of the media, selected the 32 winners from the Southern and Eastern Region that comprised of awardees from Karnataka,Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura.
The winners in the Eastern Region include Assam’s Akashitora Dutta of DY365 channel, Odisha’s Bhairab Chandra Brahma of OdiaSambad Daily, Minati Singh of the Times of India, Farhana Ahmed of The Assam Tribune, Rakhi Ghosh, Sayan Bhattacharya of Kindle.in and Kasturi Ray of The New Indian Express among others.
