On Wednesday night, a 21-year-old man spent an hour in Emanuel AME Church in Charleston,South Carolina. At the end of that one hour, he shot nine members who were attending a prayer meeting in the church.
Eight of the victims died in the historic black church while one died in the hospital. Among the dead (all blacks) was state senator Pastor Clementa Pinckney. On Thursday, the white suspect, who was identified as Dylann Roof, was captured in NorthCarolina while on the run.
Social media pictures of the young man show him wearing a jacket with an Apartheid patch.
This tragic attack adds to the ever-increasing list of hate crimes against black and coloured people in the land of dreams — America. It raises important issues of gun control and cultural intolerance in a country that is being governed by a black president.
